Green Tip #183: Reuse Old Beverage Containers

If you are hitting the open road on the long weekend and need to pack a snack make sure you have ice in there to keep your food fresh. Sustainable PF discovered a great trick from a friend of his a while back on how best to do this. Instead of using crushed ice (which eventually melts and leaves your cooler rather soggy) or those freezer packs ( which can also be messy if they leak), use an empty pop bottle or plastic juice container. Simply fill it with water the night before your departure and by morning you will have a solid ice block which will take a lot longer to melt than the bag of ice cubes.  The plastic or glass container acts as nsulation.  Moreover if you need a cold refreshing drink along the way, ice water awaits in the cooler!
