41rf6PMrojL. SL160 Sustainability Tip #4 Quality Outerwear I don’t consider myself fashion forward but I do like to look nice and appear “in with the times”! However I don’t believe in buying new clothing all the time to accomplish this, especially when it comes to winter footwear. Let’s face the facts, winter boots can’t be reused once they’ve expired. So instead of buying used I spend some extra money up front and buy a really good pair of boots that are nice looking but also keep out the wet and cold and will last many years. Ultimately this approach saves me money since I don’t spend anywhere from $50-150 every year for new boots and there aren’t machines running and consuming materials to produce more cheap boots which just end up in landfills.

Sustainability Tip #3 - Hot Drinks

Coming from Dutch and British heritage, I drink a lot of tea (preferably loose leaf and organic). When I make a cup, I only pour into the kettle the exact amount of water I need so the kettle does not run needlessly warming up excess water. I also use an electric kettle as they are more energy efficient than stove top ones.

Sustainability Tip # 1 - Turn Down the Heat

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Well as promised we are going to bring you a sustainable living tip every day for 2011. Hopefully some of these ideas are new to you, they are things we do around the house to be green and of course save money.

Turn down the heat and put on an extra layer of clothing.

No need to keep your heat cranked and pay for it later. As the cold winter sets in here in Ontario, I often wear a down vest in the evenings and sometimes cover my legs with a blanket as I watch TV and unwind. The house is not cold by any means but it is comfortable and an extra layer keeps me toasty. And there is no need to go and spend lots of money on a big sweater or vest, I found both my vests for a couple of bucks at second hand clothing stores.

Sustainability Tips - 365 Ways to Live A Sustainble Lifestyle

We will discuss being green, personal finance, lifestyle choices and more on a daily basis. We hope our readers will enjoy these tips and save money as well via the implementation of some of these tips. We recognize that these tips won’t be for everyone, and we definitely will be discussing our tips from a Canadian perspective, but we will try to show how our non-Canadian readers can benefit as well.

We hope you enjoy this series. It will take some time and effort to keep at this particular project but we feel it is well worth the effort.
