Sustainability Tip #35: Share Books

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

BooksI recently joined a book club which is great fun but can start to get expensive buying new books all the time-especially as most of the members are keen on the latest best sellers which of course haven’t come out in a cheaper copy yet. So a friend of mine and I decided that we split the cost of the book and share it. One person reads it, then lends it to the other person to read and by the time the book club meeting comes around we have both read the book. Now we also check out the local library for the book first but its usually already been taken out (probably by one of our other club members!) and we have found that usually one of us wants to keep the book anyways at the end. We split the cost and cut down one less tree.

Sustainabilty Tip# 34: Lose the Television

I remember when television shows started coming out on DVD and it was so exciting! But kind of expensive to buy or rent them. And then you realized, well that was fun to watch season 1 of my favourite television show from my teens but I don’t need to do it again and so I ended up having a DVD sitting in my bookcase. One option would be to sell it at a a garage sale or donate it to a local library. But with these options I am losing money. Another option is to by-pass the DVD’s purchase altogether and instead enjoy shows online! That’s what I do now and I have never had a problem finding a show, no matter how long ago it aired! By watching movies this way no new DVDs are produced, our house is less cluttered and we save money by not buying or renting!

Sustainability Tip #33: Pass on Your Beauty Products

I shop around for various products until I find the right one for me. This sometimes means going through half a bottle of lotion or a quarter of a bottle of shampoo before realizing that the cream still leaves my sensitive skin too dry or the shampoo does not add any shine to my hair. But what to do with all the leftov er beauty products? Well that’s where family and friends come in for me. Whenever I make a trip to see my family, I bring along whatever beauty products aren’t working for me and they usually find a new happy owner! I get rid of something I don’t need without having to flush it down the drain and someone I know gets a beauty product for free that hopefully works for them.

Sustainability Tip #32: Discount Socks

I have quite a collection of socks: dress socks, wool socks, fuzzy socks, tow socks, low-rise socks for flats, heavy duty
arctic expedition socks, etc. We live in a four season country so I am ready for any occasion! Now I usually get socks on sale or as gifts. However when I was a student I discovered an unlikely place to find good discount socks … the dollar store! I was in the Dollar Store one day getting some supplies on my student budget and came across socks. I needed some new ones at the time and so figured I would give them a try. Low and behold I still have some of those socks today, several years later, and they only cost me $1.00/pair!

Sustainability Tip #31: Green Dog Waste Bags

Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking our dog for a good romp in a nearby park. She got to meet lots of people and new dogs and best of all run around in a big open field. This time of year this park is used for dog walkers, cross country skiers, snowshoers, joggers, etc. so when our dog has to do her business I am sure to always have green dog waste bags (biodegradable) on hand. I buy ours in packages of 48 at the dollar store for $1.00. These green dog waste bags are biodegradable and just the right size. I know some folks use grocery bags but these actually cost more (for places where you have to pay $0.10 per bag like where we live) and use a lot more plastic not to mention most commonly used plastic bags out there aren’t biodegradable. Now I do realize that these green dog waste bags need sun to biodegrade but I figure as the garbage gets turned up at the dump, chances are some sunshine will hit it at some point and get the process moving along.
